5RECESSION SPECIAL!
By Dassit
I’ve had this machine for over a year. I have tried other machines, even a pump. It makes good cappuccinos/lattes when the milk is steamed properly at the right temperature. If your only into espresso shots, I would go with a different pump driven machine.

PROS
-Inexpensive, Small
-Frother is strong, plastic tip is removable
-Quiet (then a pump machine)
-Latte art hearts (SEE picture)

CONS
-Supplied tamper is just a slightly flattened end of the coffee scooper.
-No frothing pitcher.
-Multiple shots requires de-pressuring the machine.

NOTES
There seems to be a lot of reviews stating it works fine in the beginning then after a while is poor or just stops. Ive noticed that during regular use, water starts to build up in the tank. This is because you never really use all the water in the tank per brew. This excess water I believe causes a problem. Either dump it out after, or what I do is, brew it out “before” I make a cappuccino as to warm up the machine on a cold start.

There also seems to be a lot of reviews saying it’s not real espresso or there is no crema. This is true. It’s a steam driven machine they’ve been making this type of machine for years. It can not match the pressure or the amount of crema produced by a pump driven machine. BUT it can produce a decent ‘steam’ espresso w/ crema ready to be made to a latte/cappuccino. The problem with the reviewers is that there are so many factors involved in why are not producing crema or a good cup. It could be the bean, the grind, the tamp, perhaps it’s a cold start, not enough water, or too much water, etc etc the list goes on. It’s something you’ll have to figure out yourself.

Another thing to note is that the bean grind/freshness is directly proportional to the effectiveness of the steamer wand. If the beans are old and/or too course the water will brew through the coffee so fast that no pressure built up for the steamer wand to be effective. Likewise if the beans are too fine or the tamp too hard, the water will have a hard time passing thru the coffee and too much pressure will build up which isnt good either for this machine.

Do the descaling with vinegar per instructions.

Also want to note I added a picture of a latte heart I made, just to prove minimal latte art is somewhat possible with this machine.

3Great Buy
By Jessica Culp
Love this product. I read all the other reviews before buying, so I knew it didn’t come with a steaming pitcher and ordered one to go with it. However, I didn’t realize that it didn’t come with an espresso tamper either. I would have ordered one had I known, now I have to wait for the one I ordered to come in and hope it fits this machine. Would have given it 5 stars, but as a former barista, I know that to make a good latte I need a steaming pitcher and a tamper. So for an espresso machine not to come with these items is like getting a pair of sneakers with no laces. I have had no problem with leaking, and as long as the user READS THE INSTRUCTIONS, they shouldn’t have any problems either. For $40, I’ve already gotten my money’s worth in the last week. And anyone interested in buying, I would say “GO FOR IT!!!” but order a steaming pitcher and espresso tamper along with it.

Note: P.S. Get a 49mm espresso tamper to go with it. Doesn’t fit “perfectly” but its as close as I could find that wouldn’t be too big.

5don’t buy a $300 espresso machine, buy this one
By Creative Tornado
I bought this at Targét for $29, and it is freaking awesome. To the two reviewers above… if you actually read the manual you would know that the cord underneath the base can be unraveled to the desired length. This is to eliminate excess cord on your countertop.

Anyway, I discovered I was spending almost $200 at Starbucks… a near crack habit. My previous espresso machine broke over the summer–a $300 Gaggia. Prior to the gaggia I had a krups.

So I plunked down a few bucks for this one knowing I was taking a wee gamble. Usually you get what you pay for.

Let me tell ya, this little machine is great. First, it is super super quiet. My previous machines were deafening especially when frothing. Secondly, it takes up little space. Third, it’s fairly nice looking and matches our coffee maker. And of course last, it makes great lattés.

So, don’t waste your money on some huge hulking espresso machine that will only last a few years. This one does the job and won’t cause ear trauma.

5Excellent Coffee Maker
By Kschles
Early review: this is a wonderful coffee maker. I had the BV1800, which I really liked. However, I only brew about 16oz at a time. Decided to give my 1800 to a friend (who needed the larger capacity), and try this one. Both make very good coffee, but I like this one (BV1500) better for small batches. It has the pre-infusion cycle, which is a plus. The smaller carafe keeps coffee a little bit hotter. This one has a V shaped cone filter vs the flat bottom filter available on the Bonavita BV1900 and the Brazen Plus. The V filter is much better for smaller batches. My 1800 was working fine after several years, so I’m expecting the same durability from this model, but time will tell.

5Perfect for the work from home ‘I just want 2 cups in the morning’ Coffee drinker….
By Ben St. Thomas
Makes as good a cup of coffee as you can buy. A bit pricey, but worth it if you are looking for a less than 8 or 12 cup maker. The pre-saturation feature for fresh ground coffee is great. Allows plenty of bloom. And the thermal carafe keeps coffee above 120 degrees for 2 hours with no preheating. Combine this with a Capresso 560 Infinity Burr Grinder and you have barista level coffee right in your kitchen.

5Really wanted to hate this coffee maker…
By Guy S.
I’ve tried – and failed miserably – to make a decent cup of coffee at home. Since the late 80’s…. Two coffee makers. French press. Pour over. Grinding my own beans – beans that were hand picked by elves, roasted under a rainbow, and carried to the store by unicorns. No matter what I try it always tastes awful. Always.

And my standards aren’t high: My favorite coffee has always come from donut shops and Dennys – and the rare specialty shop that serves a decent cup of dark, smooth, non-bitter, non-sour coffee.

I recently bought a house in the hinterlands – and though we have an excellent coffee bar it closes very early – and it was costing me a fortune. And with no Dennys or donut shops close by it was time to exorcise my coffee demons once and for all and begin making coffee at home. After a ton of research I bought the Bonavita 5-cup in spite of the bad reviews. The larger Bonavita TS1900 was highly rated, but larger coffee makers often don’t make 4 cups very well and I wanted a coffee maker optimized for smaller batches.

Waiting for this thing to arrive made me feel 50% like a kid at Christmas, and 50% like the guy who bought the Brooklyn Bridge. A coffee maker just heats up water a drips it over beans – why should it cosdt 14x more than a comparably featured unit at WalMart? But the coffee snobs seemed to think Bonavita was magical, so I took the leap.

When the unit arrived I made my first batch with finely ground beans from my local gourmet-ish market. And…. it was awful: no wonderful fresh-brewed aroma, strong, dull. And it was lukewarm. LUKEWARM!

A big reason for buying the Bonavita was because it was capable of brewing at 195 – 205 degrees, but I didn’t see any way to adjust the temperature. Bonavita’s website FAQ’s said nothing, nor did the user manual, so I called tech support. No answer, so I left a message…. And then requested a return from Amazon. I knew that there wouldn’t be any way to adjust the temperature, and 195 – 205 is a large range when brewing coffee – the Brazen unit would have let me adjust the water temp in 1 degree increments. This unit would definitely be going back.

But the next morning something unexpected happened: Bonavita returned my call.

The first thing the tech support person asked was the grind of my beans. Turns out that fine is a no-no, coarser is better. I was also advised to make the full 5 cups if I wanted the coffee to be hot. And to let the hot water stand in the carafe for a minute or two before brewing. And to buy a coffee scoop. Also, as I suspected, there was no way to adjust the water temp.

I was skeptical but decided to experiment before returning the unit. I bought more beans, ground one batch at the Drip setting and another batch at the Coarse setting. I also bought a coffee scoop and a thermometer to measure the water temp.

Using the Drip grind beans my next batch of coffee was amazing. Strong, smooth, not bitter, not sour. The best coffee I’ve ever made, possibly the best I’ve ever had. As an FYI, I measured the water temp while brewing and it was a couple degrees shy of 200.

Unfortunately, donut shop and Dennys coffee now tastes awful to me. And the coffee at work… let’s just say I’ve contacted the UN human rights folks. I can’t justify buying a 2nd Bonavita for my office so I tried a Presto My Joe: lots of work for a diabolically awful cup of coffee. My coffee-snob friend brought in his Aeropress. Better than My Joe, but not by much. And just for good measure I tried a Cuisenart coffee maker – same beans, same grind, sour taste.

So now, thanks to the TS1500 and Bonavita’s nice tech support lady, I can only drink coffee made at home.
