5Comprehensive review of Keurig K145 Office Brewer

There was a time not long ago that I thought Keurig coffee brewers were a silly idea; overpriced, wasteful, expensive to own and not practical for a household that makes more than one cup of coffee a day.

Then late last year I was visiting a family member who had just bought the model K45 and I liked the fact that I could choose which flavor I was in the mood for and other family members could do the same. We all liked being able to brew our own fresh cup of coffee, tea or something else whenever we happened to roll out of bed. After a second visit to that person’s house I started seeing many advantages of owning one in addition to being able to drink exactly what I’m in the mood for, such as prep being nothing more complicated than keeping the coffee reservoir full, almost zero cleanup, coffee-in-a-minute, being able to make a single cup on the 5 days of the week that I only drink one cup, and knowing that there are ways to buy K-cups relatively cheap.

I liked the design of the K45 and for me the extra bells & whistles of the more expensive models were unnecessary. After researching the available models, for about the same price as the K45 I liked the K145 even better (I paid $109 for the K145 factory-direct vs the K45 selling at $104). It is virtually the identical machine with some added features and is built to the heavier-duty needs of a business office. Here are the key differences:

– The K145 has a “drain” button which purges all of the water out of the brewer including the inner tank. The K45 does not.
– The K145 has a “brew/drain” switch at the rear of the brewer. The K45 does not.
– The K145 pours a slightly larger amount of coffee per cup (3/4 of an ounce more for each size setting than the K45)
– The K145’s size selector is a rotary knob. With the K45 you push one of 3 buttons.
– The K145 has chrome/silvery trim on the top and on the drip grate. The only silver trim on the K45 is on the lift handle.
– The K145 has a very heavy-duty power cord. Not really a necessity at home but still a slight advantage.
– The K145 is 2 lbs heavier but consumes slightly less power than the K45.
– The K145 has the heavy-duty pump system that the home models used to have before they introduced “Quiet Brew Technology”. Since many of the negative reviews complain that the pump fails on the home model that seems to be a major advantage of the office model.

In actual use almost every Keurig K-cup brewer works virtually the same, with slight differences in the controls. This one is no different in that regard. While I didn’t compare them side-by-side I do think the K145 brews a cup of coffee faster than the K45. And despite some reviewer’s complaints that the office model is LOUD, it is not. Yes, it is very slightly louder than my relative’s K45 (because the pump is stronger) but there is none of that “horrible vibration” some people have talked about. The low-pitched hum lasts for about 5 seconds just before dispensing the coffee and another 17 seconds afterward to refill the tank. For reference it is much quieter than my coffee grinder, my disposal, my dishwasher, my blender and my icemaker. Please see my video for exactly what sounds to expect from this brewer.

To me the Keurig system is not really a replacement for a standard coffee maker, which is practical when there are several people in the household, or guests, who simply need to pour a cup of coffee, therefore I am keeping my old Hamilton Beach Brewstation. They sit side-by-side and even on days when the Hamilton Beach is the main coffee maker, the Keurig is there for someone who may want cider, hot chocolate, tea or just to pour a cup of hot water for something else, which you do simply by pressing the brew button without inserting a K-cup.

By the way, technically the K145 is sold only direct online by Keurig or through authorized business-product distributors which may explain any price differences between Amazon sellers and Keurig factory-direct and complaints that people are getting units with parts missing. Look carefully for words like “sold by XYZ dealer and fulfilled by Amazon” for signs that you are buying from a third-party seller and not directly from Keurig or Amazon.

5Heavy Duty Keurig
By Darrin H.
Out of the box, the Keurig K145 OfficePRO is built like a tank and is quite heavy. It is described as a “Commercial Grade” brewing system. The difference between it and the “Home” version brewing systems are: The Office units has heavy duty power cords, and heavy duty pumps. Most Keurig Home models now have what is called “Quiet Brew Technology”, and as the name suggests, are much quieter than the Office models. They are also quieter because they have smaller/weaker pumps. Some many people have complained about them failing prematurely. The K145’s pump is quite loud. It actually scares my cats when I turn it on. It’s doesn’t bother me though, and I prefer having the loud heavy duty pump over the quiet weaker pump.

Setting up the Keurig is simple even if you’ve never used one before. Included in the box with the brewer is a sample box of 12 different K-Cups. It’s a nice touch. After going through the initial cleaning process of brewing a cup or two of hot water with any K-Cup installed, I made few cups of coffee trying the different size settings. The K-145 has 3 size settings (6, 8 and 10 oz), and a convenient 48 oz water tank. I used a popular medium roast coffee for my tests. The water took a little over a minute to heat up. The actual brewing process took I’d say less than 30 seconds. At 6 oz, the coffee was hot and fairly strong for a Keurig cup of coffee. At 8 oz, the coffee remained excellent. It was still strong enough and tasted excellent. I was actually pleasantly surprised how good it was and hot it was. I’ve heard people complain about the coffee not being hot enough with other Keurig brewers. This definitely wasn’t an issue with my K145. At 10 oz, this is where the coffee was noticeably weaker. It was drinkable, but unless you like weak coffee, I’d stay at 8 oz, or not use a medium or light roast. I tried a cup of dark roast set at 10 oz, and it was good if you’re like medium roast. Dark roast lovers are gonna be out of luck and have to stick with 6 or 8 oz.

I’m very happy with the Keurig K145. It won’t replace my traditional coffee makers, but being a coffee addict, it’s a welcome addition to my kitchen.

5Necessary? No. Convenient? Absolutely!
By Gadget Geek
Purchased this commercial rated machine after reading some of the issues with some of the residential models related to the pumps, etc… I have often used my mother’s Keurig which is a K45 which she has had for nearly three years of trouble free service and I initially thought of simply getting that model based on her experience. However, the more I read, the more I began to question the quality of the units being sold based on the reviews people were posting around the internet.

Therefore, seeking out the most robust model for purchase since I am a frequent coffee drinker I came across the K145 (formerly B145), read the pretty good reviews and made the plunge.

I have had no issues regarding my machine – worked right out of the box and the portions are spot on (I have been checking from time to time to see if it was accurate).

Regarding the noise, I can’t see what the fuss is all about. It lasts about 5 seconds or so and is not nearly as loud as people make it out to be. Is it louder then the residential machine? Slightly, very slightly. However, I credit the more robust pump with the increase in noise. I cannot think of what it compares to, but I can tell you my electric razor, ice maker, hand mixer, dishwasher and microwave are all louder when operating.

So unless you are living in a monastery where everyone is operating under a vow of silence, chances are you would never hear/pay attention as the machine does its thing.

In my personal opinion, if you can afford it, step up and pay the few bucks extra if you can to get this machine with the reported stronger internals. I did it for my own personal peace of mind, even though I have never had a negative experience using a Keurig of any type.

Regarding the K-cups themselves, I pilfered a variety of different brands from my mother (Thanks mom!!) to try in my machine as the reviews indicate not all K-cups will work smoothly in this machine. So far they all have, but I have not tried any teas, chai, hot coco or any other non-coffee cup.

I did purchase the Solofill Refillable cup and that seems to work fine. The disposable paper cups and lids will NOT work in this unit (unless I am doing something incorrectly).
