The Perfect French Press
By K. Peterson
My Cozyna French Press arrived today. First of all, let me say that the company has been really attentive with an email to let me know they had shipped my French press and also information on how to use it and who to contact if I had any issues.
When I unpacked it much to my surprise there were two extra screens enclosed. Having had many French press pots before I know these screens are the first thing to break down and very hard to replace. These two extra screens will come in very handy and I really appreciate the company including them in my order.
I make tea with my French press pots, so I warmed up the pot, put the kettle on and made my first pot of tea. It worked perfectly. The tea stayed hot for a long time, no tea leaves escaped the plunger and we got to enjoy every bit of hot tea.

Produces Stainless Steel Powder You End Up Drinking. UNSAFE.
By Rae
I tried this in a store recently, along with several others, and found the same flaw on all models. If the plunger base (where you find your fine mesh filter on all French Presses) comes in contact with the inner wall of the stainless steel unit at any point, which it will, the ring/rim of the mesh portion of the plunger will scrape the side and take tiny flecks of stainless steel with it, a fine powder of metal that you will be drinking with your coffee, as it is so fine as to easily pass through that metal mesh filter. Cancer, liver failure, dementia, take your pick. You’ll be poisoning yourself if you use this or any other stainless steel unit that is not glass lined (and glass linings can crack or break).
For the record, the Cozyna and Bodum and VonShef (and all other stainless steel presses I tested) produced a fine powder of steel particles when tested and are not safe to use.
Note: All of the French Presses I tried were units that had been plunged again and again and, as a result, had at least one point of contact resulting in scraping and the production of the fine, stainless steel powder. The safest version of the metal I found was a chromium and nickel mix, both of which are toxic in higher than very low milligram doses and are not intended to be ingested as metal shavings. If you have a stainless steel French Press, please check it before each use to make sure it has not developed one or more points of contact where the metal inside is being shaved off into the cup. My old Il Mulino press has been retired to non-food use because, as it turns out, it has a point of contact. The worst offenders, with 100% of the surface of the interior being scraped in this fashion by the mesh/plunger assembly, were the Bodums and the Frielings that I tested, possibly because they are the most popular brands.
I was asked by a manufacturer to be clearer on the circumstances of my trying of their unit. To be clear, I found that my Il Mulino was shedding this fine steel dust. I asked two friends, both of whom manage local coffee houses to post a sign asking people to bring in their metal French Presses on specific days. A number of people showed up at each house on each day and we tested all of their units and wrote down the names of the units tested at the time. All units had the same flaw, as all had been used enough to develop it. None were reported to be over two years old and nearly all were reported, by the owners to be less than one year old. Reports of use ranged from “once in a while” to “daily”. Not all units had names on them but they were matched based on owner report and pictures on Amazon to the units I have reviewed. I have not reviewed any units that were not seen in person and will not, though I suspect they suffer the same flaw. I will not retract my reviews due to the inconvenience it may cause some manufacturers because this is an issue of the health of the consumer. I only looked at my Il Mulino press because I tested positive for heavy metal poisoning and my doctor specifically asked about sources of Nickel in my home. That press was a source and, very possibly, the source. However, I will reiterate that none of the presses I examined were brand new, all had been used, and all were tested simply by inspecting the carafe, making sure there was no steel dust, pushing and retracting the plunger ten times, then removing it to see if steel dust had been deposited. All units inspected (including many duplicates of two Bodums that I can only review once) had the same steel-dust production problem. I hope this clarifies the issue and puts an end to the not so pleasant messages.
As an aside, if you are still reading reviews of stainless steel presses, you may be interested in Kamerod, Hobbie and Anderson’s, “Stainless steel leaches nickel and chromium into foods during cooking” from The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (J Agric Food Chem. 2013 Oct 2;61(39):9495-501. doi: 10.1021/jf402400v. Epub 2013 Sep 19.) Or perhaps Dan and Ibong’s, “IMPACT OF COOKING UTENSILS ON TRACE METAL LEVELS OF PROCESSED FOOD ITEMS” from Annals. Food Science and Technology. These are just two of the more recent articles on this issue. It is well known that the FDA allows higher levels of toxic chemicals in everything from household cleaners to make-up than most developed countries. Unfortunately, this extends to our cookware as well.
Good luck with your search and please don’t send me hate mail if you own this and disagree with me. My opinion of this item is not meant to offend but to inform.

a solid product…
By paul park
i returned the sterlingpro (with the glass) french press upon delivery. its four legged base wasn’t level, and was unstable and obviously unsafe for any kind of brew. so i bought this stainless steel version of the cozyna dove french press. it’s a great french press! it presses a lot of coffee and keeps it hot for up to 2 hours. it has a shiny chrome exterior, and its handle has a smooth, curved design.
after using it about five times, i haven’t had any problems with it yet. great coffee. no need to be concerned about it continuing to steep. after several taste tests, the coffee tastes pretty much the same from the first cup to the last, about an hour or so later. once the filter is pressed all the way down, the coffee doesn’t continue to steep.
thanks for the great product. maybe it’s time i buy one for the office now.
