5Durable & well designed
By Cenile D. Mentia
==UPDATED 12/26/14==

I’ved tried a couple French Presses, including the $20.00 Bodum French Press & the SterlingPro coffee press, and this is my favorite one so far. Since all of the french presses essentially work the same, there’s not much variation in the quality of the coffee (they all taste delicious!). Though this model is a bit more expensive, you’re paying for a much better design.

For those who don’t know how french presses work (I didn’t know when I first got one), I’ll offer a short explanation. You take some coarse ground coffee (which you can get from stores or a manual grinder), put it in the french press, and then pour in hot water. This leads to a richer taste than traditional drip brewers, since all the grounds are completely immersed in hot water, and all the oils of the coffee ground aren’t filtered out. After letting it sit for some time (usually no more than 4 minutes), you press down the grounds slowly, and you’ll have some delicious, rich coffee waiting for you. Another advantage of a french press is the flexibility-you can adjust the temperature of the water as well as the concentration of the coffee (by adjusting the amount of coffee grounds), so you can brew the coffee the way you want.

As for this particular press, it’s my favorite because of it’s excellent design. The glass carafe is well protected with a plastic grip-this makes it a lot stronger and makes the press a bit more durable. My last french press cracked, and I’m still not sure how that happened. It also has an elegant look to it. This press is also designed so that no plastic touches the hot water when you’re brewing the coffee, so that’s always a plus. It also comes with a spoon for measuring out coffee grounds.

Functionally, it works perfectly. I didn’t get any grounds in my coffee, and the coffee itself tasted delicious. Just make sure you don’t press down too fast, or the water might come out and burn your hands.

All in all, I love this french press! It’s my favorite out of the 3 that I have tried, and though you’re paying a bit more than some of the other presses, I think the increased durability is totally worth it.

Feel free to leave any questions and comments below!

UPDATE 12/26: Just wanted to update this review a bit. I’ve used this for ~3 months now and it still works great. It’s durable, and as long as you wash it, the filter still works fine. Those who are looking for replacement filters can find them here: Coffee French Press Replacement Screen Parts (2Pack) Best Universal 8-Cup Stainless Steel Reusable Filter Accessories. They’re made by the same company and I can attest that they work just fine with this coffee press.

-Please note that I was given a review unit.

4Very nice French Press… a great way to make coffee
By M. Erb
Watch Video Here: http://ift.tt/1DXrIPH On many days my Keurig satisfies my coffee needs but when I want a really good tasting cup of coffee, I turn to my French Press. It makes such a significantly better tasting cup of coffee. One reason coffee tastes better is because a French Press allows the volatile oils in the coffee to remain and not get filtered out by a paper filter. I should probably use it everyday. But when I’m rushed, the Keurig always wins out when convenience is factored into the equation.

A French Press can come in different sizes. This is a pretty good sized one at 34oz capacity. Allowing some space at the top, realistically you’ll be making 4 to 5-6oz cups of coffee with this press. Because French Press coffee generates some sediment, I usually don’t fully empty the press to get the absolute most coffee out of it… I don’t like drinking sludge. You can minimize the sludge by perfecting the grind coarseness of the coffee you use and by letting the coffee settle after it has brewed and then pouring slowly.

This is using a Borosilicate glass (capable of withstanding boiling water temperatures without cracking) carafe which is pretty much what all quality French Presses use. It has a nice no-drip spout. The plastic lid is made of HDPE (high density polyethylene) and is BPA free. The internal components of the French Press are stainless steel.

This French Press uses a single screen that is of decent quality. The only small issue is that the center hole through the screen, where the shaft goes through to attach to the bottom filter plate, does not have reinforcement around it thus may be prone to fraying after repeated cleanings.

One trouble spot for some French Presses is that the plunger will wobble when you are pressing it down. This occurs if there is not an adequately long sleeve in the top of the lid for the shaft to pass through. If it is too short, the shaft can be a little crooked and not plunge smoothly. This has an adequately long sleeve to help prevent that from happening.

I use a burr grinder to grind my own beans. This way I can get the grind just how I like it. Too fine a grind is not good to use, nor is too coarse of a grind. If the coffee is ground too fine, it will clog up the screen and the plunger will be difficult to press down. This will also result in a lot of sludge in your coffee. Too coarse of a grind will not allow the fullness of the coffee to be realized. You need to find a balance with your grind somewhere too fine and too coarse to optimize the brew.

I usually use 1.5 – 2 Tablespoons of coffee per 6oz cup. But that is largely a personal choice. If you like strong coffee, use a bit more, but probably not more than 2 Tablespoons per 6 oz cup. Less than 1 Tablespoon per 6 oz cup will probably result in too weak of a brew.

After you’ve measured your coffee into the carafe, pour just off boiling water into the carafe but leave about 2 inches at the top. I then give it a little stir with a wooden handle to thoroughly mix the grounds into the water. Don’t use a metal utensil or you could chip or crack the glass. Carefully insert the press into the carafe making sure that the slots in the cap are pointed towards the spout in the carafe. The screen should be resting just on top of the water. Do not plunge yet. Wait 4 minutes then slowly push the press all the way down. Let the coffee settle for a minute or two and then slowly pour your coffee. If you won’t be drinking all the coffee right away, pour all the coffee out of the French Press into a thermos or other carafe otherwise the coffee will get too bitter from sitting on top of the coffee grounds.

The glass carafe should never be heated in a microwave or stove top. You should hand wash the carafe since they can break pretty easily if it bangs into something while in the dishwasher.

I like this French Press. The housing is attractive and seems sturdy. It works well. The carafe also seems to be of good quality.

I was provided a free sample for review.

5Great for making tea too
By J. Chambers
Watch Video Here: http://ift.tt/1JBYhZL I don’t drink coffee, but I do brew hot tea all day, and I love it. Tea bags are very convenient, but there are hundreds of fine teas that are only available as loose tea. A French press is ideal for brewing these loose teas, and it’s easier to use than trying to stuff tea leaves into an infuser.

The Kona French press is very easy to use, and the fine mesh filter trapped virtually all the tea leaves at the bottom when I poured off the hot tea. Washing the filter was a simple matter of rinsing it under warm running water.

The press is attractive and looks durable enough to last for a long time. I’m looking forward to some very nice cups of tea.

A product sample was provided for review purposes.

3Good espresso machine if it lasts …
By Ranjit R. Vadakkan
Edited (07/19/14)
I have gone through 2 of these machines in the past year and a half. Both of them died the same way – they seem to lose their pressurization capability and so can’t brew coffee anymore.

When the first one died after about a year of service, I gave it the benefit of the doubt. But now that the second one has conked out in just under half a year, I’ll look for a different brand.

And I’ve taken good care of both of them, especially when it came to descaling – not only do I have a home water softener, but I also used Durgol every 4-6 weeks.

Original review – 5 stars (Dec 2012)
I purchased this from the local Bed, Bath & Beyond since the price in store was the same as that on Amazon($199), but I could use a 20% coupon in the store. This was a ‘blind’ purchase – I couldn’t find reviews for this product anywhere on the net, in fact I seem to the first person reviewing this on Amazon as well.

I didn’t know what to make of the Mr. Coffee brand (cheap/commodity brand in my opinion, maybe I’m mistaken) and the $199 price tag, but the feature set seemed to be good for the price – a 15 bar pump, a milk frother that automatically dispenses the milk into the serving, espresso/cappuccino/latte at the press of a button and a cleaning cycle for the frother. I’ve used the machine for a little more than a week now and can confidently say that this is one hell of an espresso machine.

I’ve tried Illy and Lavazza in the machine so far, and the espresso comes out great – you won’t believe the crema you get. Highly recommend it!

Pros:
+ can use whatever brand of coffee you prefer, you’re not stuck with expensive pods/capsules
+ strong pump that produces rich crema
+ milk frother
+ espresso/cappuccino/latte at the press of a button (the machine automatically adjusts the amount of milk and coffee in the serving)
+ options for making single, double shot and custom servings
+ milk frothing can also be controlled manually (you can adjust the amount of milk in the serving if you’re unsatisfied with what the automatic programs provide)
+ the milk container and the lid of the container (which contains the frother) are both dishwasher safe, although I haven’t tried washing them in the dishwasher.

Cons:
– none that I’ve found so far

However, if I could make one change to the machine, it would be the amount of force you have to apply to insert the milk container into the machine (and to take it out). I suspect this has to do with the O-ring in the interface between the machine and the container. Since the container and the interface are all molded from plastic, my fear is that one of them will give sooner or later. Let’s hope that Mr. Coffee has tested this extensively.

5An absolutely WONDERFUL espresso, cappuccino, and latte maker
By Kathleen San Martino
I own a Krups Novo 2000 (Model 984) Plus Espresso/Cappuccino machine for about 13 years which I feel is pretty good except for the difficulty I have cleaning the frothing spigot and keeping it free of clogs. Therefore, when this Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista came up for review, I jumped at the chance to own it. What I found is that this is an absolutely WONDERFUL espresso, cappuccino, and latte maker and will now be my goto unit.

The Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista has to be primed according to the instructions in the book before first use. After that it is ready to use.

Here’s what I love about this machine:

– The instructions are comprehensive and very clear.

– A few espresso, cappuccino and latte recipes are supplied for variations on these coffee drinks.

– The entire unit is self-contained, meaning there is no need to purchase an external frothing carafe for the milk as one is provided that attaches to the unit.

– I can brew a single or double shot of espresso, cappuccino, or latte with a single or double touch of one button.

– It has a 15-bar pump which produces a lot of pressure for the froth.

– There’s the ability to brew a custom cup of espresso, cappuccino, or latte. Let’s say I wanted to brew 5 ounces of espresso for my cappuccino or latte, I could hold the espresso button for 3 seconds and let it stop on its own at 5 ounces, then I could turn the frothing lever to the desired frothing level, and hold the cappuccino button for 3 seconds to create froth.

– The control panel was easy for me to understand. For instance, the picture to the right of each button indicates what happens if you hold the button for 3 seconds. This ability gives the brewer the option to add additional froth when needed without brewing more coffee. It also allows for a custom cup of brew up to 5 ounces as described above or allows for the cleaning of the unit.

– The unit is easy to clean with the use of the cleaning button but the brew head has to be cleaned separately. Both cleaning should be done after each use. (NOTE: To clean the brew head, put an empty cup under it and press the espresso button once making sure there’s no coffee in the porta-filter.)

– There’s a pull-out cup height adjusting tray that is easily accessible if using a demitasse cup for espresso.

– I found the milk reservoir to be easy to insert all the way.

– The porta-filter (part that holds coffee grinds) was easy to connect to the brew head although moving it into the locked position does take some strength. Once it is in the locked position, the porta-filter sticks straight out perpendicular to the unit.

Obviously, there are a lot of moving parts on a machine such as this. The scoop/tamper, porta-filter, filters, water and milk reservoirs all have to be washed. Also the unit should be wiped down with a damp rag, especially the lower part of the brew head and the drip tray. According to the manual, only the milk reservoir and lid are dishwasher safe. The porta-filter, filters, and the water reservoir are NOT dishwasher safe. I really don’t understand how the milk reservoir can be dishwasher safe and not the water reservoir but this is what the manual indicates. Personally, I would never put anything in the dishwasher.

I did not find any negatives with this unit. Although the cord is 2 feet long which is on the short side, the length is still typical of most high-end appliances. To me it’s wonderful and had I purchased it, I would have felt it was a great buy. My boyfriend tried the cappuccino and loved it. I tried both the cappuccino and latte and loved both. He said the machine is worth the price even if he were to purchase it. That comment is surprising to me since he is very frugal and is very selective when parting with his pennies.

I used the unit a couple of times and will update this review if the Mr. Coffe Cafe Barista fails in any way. As of this moment, I consider this a high-quality machine and a highly recommended purchase.

March 29, 2013 UPDATE: I’ve been using this every day but one since I got it. I am an avid tea drinker and this machine has almost destroyed my evening desire for tea–good for Mr. Coffee but not for me. This morning when I was making the cappuccino I did not get any froth. I actually thought the machine broke. However, it was because I left the milk reservoir dial in the “cleaning” position. Since this unit has no sensors, it is important to check that the frothing nozzle is centered over the cup and the milk reservoir dial is set to either latte or froth cappuccino and only set to clean when the machine is being cleaned. I will make a note to myself to move the dial back to froth cappuccino or latte after a cleaning cycle otherwise this will probably happen again.

5Great Espresso Machine for a great value!
By Tim
I bought this espresso maker for my wife as a gift. I chose this product because it seems to offer the most bang for your buck in terms of features.

As I was researching espresso machines, I started to notice that a lot of the machines seemed time consuming. I have also heard many stories about families that have dumped big $$$ into an espresso machine, then stopped using it because it was too time consuming to actually make yourself a beverage. (I remember the first home espresso machine I ever saw in person. It took the owner 20+ minutes to make me a drink. I remember thinking that seemed ridiculous. I also remember that espresso machine sitting unused for years after the novelty wore off.) Knowing how busy my family is, I did not want to fall into this same boat.

The Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista is great for a busy family. I can turn it on, press a few buttons, then return a few minutes later to a fresh brewed delicious espresso beverage. Not only is it convenient, but the beverage tastes great too. After you have finished brewing the beverage, cleanup is a breeze. Again, push a button, then the machine is cleaned. Also, the milk container easily separates from the machine and can be placed in the fridge to keep your milk fresh. I’m sure other espresso machines are great (and they better be for the price) but this one won out, hands down, in the convenience department.

Another feature that was important to me was I DID NOT want a pod based machine. I have a pod based coffee maker, and the truth is we don’t use it because the pods are really expensive. Yes it is convenient, but the cost will eat through the average checking account just about as quickly as a daily run to your favorite coffee spot. Also, many of the pod based espresso makers require two pods (coffee and dairy) to make your beverage (see MORE $$$)! It is not a big deal to get coffee beans ground for an espresso machine, then tamp your grounds into the machine.

A few other thoughts. The machine comes with a recipe book. I’ve tried a few, they are delicious (Nutella Latte!). You can brew a single or double shot! The machine feels quality built and very durable. The machine is loud, but I would imagine anything including a milk steamer would be (just imagine how loud they are at Starbucks, now imagine that in your kitchen). If you can’t stand noisy appliances, I would avoid this machine. Tamping your own espresso can be messy until you get used to it. Be prepared to spill some grounds and such as you learn.

The bottom line is, I believe this machine will put an end to our ritualistic weekend Starbucks runs. I did the math. This machine will pay for itself within a couple months.
