This is my third coffeemaker of my “career,” the past two Krups and DeLonghi, neither of which lasted very long (stopped working and carafe broke with slight tap against sink, respectively), so I used past experience and current reviews to settle in on a couple of models for #3. This was one of the two finalists, the other the Hamilton Beach 46201, and I chose this because: (1) Easy view water window that’s at least on the side (front would be ideal), for it’s a bit dark where I have my coffee maker, and I mainly want to spot whether I had put water in there or not; (2) large buttons/better display; (3) it used a #4 cone filter, and I had a couple dozen or so paper filters plus an used permanent #4 filter from coffee maker #2 that I hoped would work, which would save me having to buy another permanent filter, a $10 or so savings over the other (with coffee maker #2, I was trying to use up the rest of my paper filters before using the permanent filter, but I didn’t make it that far); (4) I’d probably spill the other’s removable water reservoir more than I would a carafe, which has a handle; and (5) both carafe and basket are dishwasher-safe with this one.
How did it work out? For the most part, I’m happy with the 49618. Here are my impressions:

+What I noted above: while the water window isn’t the best I saw (some have both sides or larger fonts), it’s superior to a water window in the back, which is akin to HDMI and RCA plugs on TVs, and this one’s location and readability surpasses both of my previous coffee makers in that regard.
+ The coffee is, so far, always hot – I pour it into an excellent thermos (http://ift.tt/1D7IYHf) and bring it to my office at work), again better than both previous coffee makers.
+ The large buttons are limited to a handful, have short labels or a picture, are responsive, and almost toggle. Occasionally, I go past the time that I want to set it for, but that’s not a huge inconvenience, for the numbers advance at a steady and fortunately not rapid pace. I can read each button without reading glasses.
+ While this coffee maker has a big oval for the coffee to go in, my permanent coffee filter squeezes in without a lot of difficulty, nor with worry of it breaking. The coffee has brewed fine with it in place as well as with paper filters.
+ The programmable function works fine. I set it for about 15 minutes before I arrive in the kitchen (where I have it), and my coffee’s always ready and waiting. This is using the “regular” brewing option. I can’t say about the other two yet.
+ Due to there being a good amount of plastic in each, the carafe and the unit are both lightweight, bordering on feeling cheap, though an acceptable place to save money, and the lighter carafe is a welcome improvement over my preceding coffee makers.
+ While the place where you pour the water is – as typical – at the back, not the most practical location, the “target,” or where you attempt to pour, is large and easily hittable, even with the coffee maker near flush to the wall behind it, as is the case in my situation, and there’s one on each side (one for left-handers, one for right-handers?) that doesn’t adversely affect the adjacent brew basket that holds the coffee grounds that’s in front of both.
+ Has built-in vent slits above the brew basket, which allows the heat/steam to escape while the coffee is brewing. When I lift the lid, it’s never been hot.

0 The display is of adequate font size. The numbers on the side of the carafe are small. In both cases, the spacing is good enough to figure it out without having to trouble myself with getting my reading glasses!
0 Auto pause and serve. While I didn’t use it intentionally for this, it does work. However, as with other coffee makers, a drip comes through to hit the warming plate, not a big deal and probably less than my others. A drip or so is typically left in the carafe when “done,” but that’s also typical.
0 The instructions are okay, but the machine is very straightforward, too. This one doesn’t have a “clean” button like my last one, but then that one still blinked “clean” (as in it needs to be) even after I “cleaned” it. This one is dependent on your making the call based on usage.
0 Compared to the many others I looked at: Black & Decker, Mr. Coffee, etc., this one had the best – though not perfect – combination of features that I was looking for. Don’t be surprised if this is the same in your coffee maker shopping
? I have only tried the “regular” brewing option; I haven’t tried the “bold” or “1-4 cup” options yet. It’s interesting to me that they call the latter a “brew strength” option.

– The biggest, by far, is the incredibly-short 2 foot power cord! I had to swap it with an adjacent rice maker to be able to plug the coffee maker in. The funny thing is that I got the impression from seeing it that the cord rolled around the bottom of the unit (tucked in, as my coffee grinder’s does), but no. It was actually that short! Why they cut costs in this way is a head-shaker. And, who sells an extension cord that’s one foot? On the other hand, once – and if – you have a place that works for the short cord, this is no longer an issue.
– The second is the display. I like to unplug my coffee maker after I’m done with the coffee, so as to not leave the house with it plugged in, and I do the same when I’m done with the toaster, both I think are ingrained from my childhood. On the good side, this one’s clock starts at 12:00, the timer at 0:00; my previous one started at 6:00 for the timer by default, and since I leave before then, with coffee maker #2, I had to “do the math” based on when I went to sleep. For this one, I can program in the actual times. The downside is this: despite it appearing to have some kind of lit display, unlike the 46201, which appears to have a lit display in its picture, this display is not lit, another head-shaker, which may lead to my leaving the coffee maker plugged in all the time. While the box says this is 950 watts, I’d imagine that when it’s idle there’s minimal power use.

After one week, I’m very satisfied. Primary functions I wanted were cone shaped filter, automatic shutoff, adjustable coffee strength. All were satisfied. The unit is attractive enough also so no complaints from the other half.

I did alot of research and finally ended up buying this one because I was biased to Hamilton Beach. This model looks nice but it has some major flaws. 1. When you pour out the coffee from the pot, there’s always a little left behind. Same if you use the pot to fill water into the coffeemaker. 2. The powercord is a bit too short so I have to plug it in close to the outlet. 3. The filter basket is ok but the after 3 days of use, the top lid just will not close.
Overall just an ok coffee maker. I won’t buy it again.
