5A Must-Have for Coffee Lovers
By Julia Morey
This is hands down the best coffee I have ever produced at home. The Syphon Coffee Maker is a simple and clean machine, which produces an incredibly clean tasting coffee. i love it. My automatic drip machine has been completely retired to the basement, and I exclusively use the Syphon now, every morning. One tip to pass along: invest in a butane burner, which burns hotter, (therefore faster) and the flame is easily adjusted. The alcohol burner that comes with this Syphon Coffee Maker burns cooler, and there is no easy way to adjust the flame, which is an important part of the brewing process. I found the Wall Lenk BT 4601 Bella Tavola Fondue/Chafing Butane Burner, available on Amazon.com, very effective. It fits nicely under the Syphon Coffee Maker and works great. It could also work for the campsite, when fire building is compromised. Try this Coffee Maker! You won’t be disappointed.

5Makes a great pot of coffee!
By ET
I have made probably 5 or 6 pots of coffee so far, and I am more than happy with the results. Not only is it “fun”, but it makes a tasty brew! Two things that helped me:

1.) This ships from Japan, so not surprisingly, all the instructions are in Japanese. If you do a google search for “siphon intelligentsia”, you will find a GREAT video demonstrating how to use it. And by the way, grab some coffee while you’re at it. Love Intelligensia!

2.) I found that I could set this up right above one of my burners on my gas stove and it works great!

Great purchase! Very happy.

3A bit too delicate and fiddly
By ehgeee
This is a novel approach, but deathly slow, messy and a bit too delicate and fiddly.
You’ll have to find a place in the kitchen for all the setup, clean-up and storage — it’s a lot of delicate glass pieces.
I didn’t like the idea of having an open container of fuel in the kitchen, and the idea of a naked flame on the bench …. but that all turned out to be just one or two of many drawbacks.
In short, it takes too long to boil water with a little candle wick burning alcohol. So you’ll end up pre-heating water.
I used a kettle, then fill to the “3” level (that’s about right for one travel mug.) Between setup, brewing and clean-up, it’s over 10 minutes and it requires almost continuous attention because the brewing process will burn the coffee if left unattended.

You have to scoop in a generous amount of coffee — I ended up with a grind a bit finer than a drip, but not too fine because the “filter” in this is really a piece of tightly woven cloth, which needs to be cleaned (it’s not a disposable or even readily replaceable piece, it’s sort of sewn on with a draw string (?) … but again, that’s not the big draw back.

For me, it just couldn’t produce a strong cup of coffee and it tastes no better than any conventional drip even though it has a sort of pressure-suction stage, it really relies upon the coffee sitting in the hot/boiling water.

You can get a very hot and reasonably tasty cup of coffee out of this device, but it’s time-consuming and you end up with a clean-up task.

It’s sort of a chemistry experiment set. The spheroid boiler is quite sturdy. I dropped it a few inches onto a concrete bench, no problem. It goes through the dishwasher no problem. But I’m careful to let it cool after it has been sitting over the naked flame. The upper flash is too fragile. The cleaning lady bumped it sideways and it broke. She should have been far more careful, but still, it’s just too easy to break the upper bit. When I was disposing of the broken glass, I could see that it’s well made, high quality, but just plain thin and delicate. It should be robust like the “ball” section.

And the nail in the coffin for me (and why I don’t want to keep using it) is the impossible task of removing the upper section from the lower section once the coffee brews. It’s really stuck in there. You have to hold it with a kitchen towel or cloth or oven mit (it’s boiling hot when you need to separate it and pour out the brewed coffee) and there’s no easy way to separate the two pieces of glass (suctioned together on a plastic seal. So you have to sort of lever the top bit back and forth (as described in the instructions and then I try to squeeze my hand (protected from the heat by the tea towel) between the botton glass bowl and the upper glass brewing bowl. It’s awkward and not fun to apply force to glass, especially when it’s full of coffee grounds and boiling coffee … it’s just not well designed for this stage of the process, it needs something designed to hold a seal, then release the seal without force and allow the two pieces of glass to easily separate. You might think it’s possible to keep them “just barely” sealed, but that alters the height of the “funnel” in the boiling water, which effects the volume of boiling water that doesn’t get forced up into the brewing bowl upper section. Suffice to say, if you don’t get a tight seal, you get a diluted brew.

All that said, it’s a fun little device, but it’s not a convenient way to make coffee and it doesn’t make a strong cup.
